Today, one of the main criteria passengers consider when choosing a bus carrier is the level of service provided by transportation companies. One of the key elements of this service is the availability of reliable, high-speed Internet on the bus.

That is why installing Starlink satellite communication terminals on buses has become not just an option, but a real necessity for carriers competing in today’s market.

Why do carriers choose Starlink for buses instead of GSM modems?

Until recently, most bus operators used GSM modems to provide Internet access on the road. However, this solution has several disadvantages:

  • mobile operators impose traffic limits (all data used beyond the plan is charged separately, while the average traffic consumed by passengers on a single bus can exceed 1 TB)
  • limited coverage from GSM cell towers
  • relatively low Internet speeds when several users are connected simultaneously
  • SIM cards from different operators are required in different countries if the bus route crosses several countries.
  • On average, a single trip, for example to Germany, can cost around €60 for Internet access alone.

That is why carriers are increasingly choosing Starlink for vehicles, as it provides continuous connectivity for drivers, dispatchers, and passengers. The use of protected mobile kits makes it possible to install Starlink on buses, trucks, tractor units, and virtually any vehicle operating while in motion.

AUTOSTAR GROUP has developed special protective enclosures and power supply systems for installing Starlink on cars, buses, and other vehicles.

Why businesses choose Starlink for buses

Many routes pass through “dead zones” or areas with poor mobile network coverage. In such conditions, Starlink for buses offers a number of advantages:

  • stable Internet access on the road without relying on cellular towers;
  • the ability to transmit telemetry, camera video streams, and GPS tracker data;
  • online access for drivers to routes, CRM platforms, and logistics systems;
  • Internet access for passengers — a competitive advantage on intercity and international routes;
  • the ability to operate in any region of Ukraine, the EU, and worldwide.
  • reduced costs for Internet access while in motion.

Trucks, tractor units, and buses equipped with Starlink gain complete independence from mobile infrastructure. The use of professional protective enclosures and thermal protection ensures reliable equipment operation even in challenging conditions — freezing temperatures, heat, vibrations, and precipitation.

Starlink on a bus: how it works

Satellite Internet technology allows the system to receive signals directly from the satellite constellation, eliminating communication “dead zones.” A protected enclosure containing the Starlink terminal is installed on the vehicle. A router is installed inside the passenger compartment to distribute Internet access via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

How Starlink works while in motion:

  • the antenna automatically tracks satellites;
  • the communication module switches between satellite beams without interrupting the connection;
  • the system maintains a stable connection while traveling at speeds of 80–160 km/h;
  • the result is Starlink Internet speeds of 50–200+ Mbps while in motion, depending on coverage.

Before installation, specialists test the Starlink signal and then adapt the system to the specific type of vehicle.

Who can benefit from Starlink for buses and vehicles

The technology is actively being adopted by:

  • bus companies and private carriers;
  • international and domestic logistics companies;
  • freight truck operators;
  • owners of tractor units used for long-distance transportation;
  • corporate vehicle fleets and critical services;

For these customers, uninterrupted operation is essential — and experience using Starlink in commercial and military environments demonstrates that the solution is stable, low-maintenance, and offers a fast return on investment.

Benefits of Starlink on buses for businesses

  • reduced vehicle downtime;
  • safer routes through online monitoring;
  • real-time driver monitoring;
  • Wi-Fi access for passengers — increasing customer loyalty;
  • transmission of weight and customs data without delays;
  • continuous operation of corporate services without mobile network interruptions.

This makes Starlink for transportation one of the key tools in digital logistics.

Which Starlink should you choose for a bus?

For installing Starlink on a vehicle, you can choose between three types of terminals: Starlink Mini, Starlink Gen 3 Rev 4, and Starlink High Performance.

What is the difference?

Starlink Mini is a compact satellite communication terminal with low power consumption. The average Internet speed while in motion is around 100 Mbps. Starlink states that up to 125 users can connect simultaneously, but in practice, up to 10 simultaneous users can comfortably use the connection. This model is ideal for private cars, minibuses such as the Hyundai Staria, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and other similar vehicles.

Advantages:

  • compact size
  • low power consumption
  • does not require additional power supply units or other power management equipment inside the vehicle
  • provides comfortable Internet access for up to 10 users

Disadvantages:

  • lower signal transmission/reception performance
  • more vulnerable to adverse weather conditions, which can affect connection quality
  • limited number of users for comfortable simultaneous use

Starlink Gen 3 Rev 4 is a powerful standard third-generation Starlink terminal with an average power consumption of 75–100 W, providing Internet speeds of up to 300 Mbps while in motion. Starlink states that up to 235 users can connect simultaneously, but in practice, the system provides comfortable Internet access for approximately 70–80 simultaneous users. This model is ideal for full-size buses with a passenger capacity of up to 60 people, as well as for personal use in areas with limited sky visibility (mountains, forests) and areas with a high concentration of Starlink terminals.

Advantages:

  • high-quality and stable connection
  • provides comfortable Internet access for 60–80 users
  • higher bandwidth

Disadvantages:

  • larger dimensions compared to Starlink Mini
  • additional equipment is required to power the terminal from the onboard electrical system of a car, bus, or truck: a pure sine wave inverter or a 12/24 V Power Adapter
  • installation should be performed by experienced automotive electricians or AUTOSTAR GROUP specialists

Starlink High Performance is the most powerful Starlink terminal, with an average power consumption of 110–300 W and Internet speeds of up to 400 Mbps while in motion. Starlink specifically recommends these terminals for installation on vehicles because they have higher signal priority than standard solutions. However, the price of these terminals starts at $2,000.

Advantages:

  • higher signal priority and stable connectivity
  • provides comfortable Internet access for up to 100 users
  • higher bandwidth

Disadvantages:

  • price
  • larger dimensions
  • a powerful pure sine wave inverter is required to power the terminal from the onboard electrical system of a car, bus, or truck
  • installation should be performed by experienced automotive electricians or AUTOSTAR GROUP specialists

Pricing and operation

The cost of the equipment depends on the antenna type, protective enclosure, and additional components. Current Starlink prices in Ukraine are available on the AUTOSTAR GROUP website.

Installation takes approximately 1–2 hours. After installation, Starlink connection, account activation, and system performance testing are carried out.

Starlink repair and maintenance

In case of damage to the enclosure, cables, or routers, the AUTOSTAR GROUP service center provides Starlink repair and maintenance.

Support includes billing management, diagnostics, software updates, replacement of components, and restoration of equipment functionality after mechanical damage.

Conclusion

Installing Starlink for buses, Starlink for vehicles, as well as solutions for trucks and tractor units, is the key to uninterrupted connectivity in virtually any conditions. Modern carriers are switching to satellite communications because they provide greater control, safety, speed, and a higher level of service for their customers.

Starlink Ukraine continues to demonstrate a high level of reliability, while AUTOSTAR GROUP mobile kits make the system protected, stable, and suitable for operation in demanding field conditions.
